Chapter Nineteen

STELLA

A shirtless ball player gyrated his hips right at my eye level, running a hand down his rippling abs.

“How on earth did I let you talk me into this?” I leaned over and hissed at Monty.

The entire starting basketball squad was lined up on the stage in one of the campus theaters in varying states of undress, the college carnival ringing out just outside. Some players were in their full uniforms, while others were shirtless.

West, Van, and Bant were shoulder-to-shoulder further down the line, all three in nothing but jeans with their incredible rippling abs on full display. Except for Van of course, who was also sporting his usual backwards cap, looking like a poster boy for college basketball and broken hearts. His nipple piercing glinted under the lights.

Imogen squinted at them. “Have they oiled their chests?”

Monty shrugged. “Knowing them... probably.”

“Guarantee you it was Bant’s idea,” I said.

I tried not to stare too hard at Van’s glistening pecs. Surely it was like staring at the sun too long and would cause permanent damage to my eyesight.

Or ruin me for every other guy.

“So, you’re bidding on West, right?” I asked Monty.

She winked at him and blew a kiss in his direction. “Absolutely.”

West clutched a hand to his chest like a lovesick fool and stumbled back. Van raised an eyebrow at the pathetic display of love, while Bant bent over with both hands on his knees and pretended to dry retch.

They really were sickeningly into each other.

Imogen bumped her shoulder with mine. “You got your eye on anyone, Stell?”

“I’m just here to enjoy the show.”

Monty rubbed her hands together. “And what a show it’s going to be!”

The auctioneer appeared on stage, revving up the crowd of mostly women to kick off the auction. He reminded all of us that the lucky person with the winning bid on each player would get to spend a fun-filled day with them at the carnival, riding the mini roller coaster or crashing into each other on the bumper cars. There were plenty of jersey chasers in the crowd, ready for their one-on-one moment with a basketball player who was obligated to spend time with them for charity. The team had chosen to donate to the local women’s shelter in town.

The auctioneer opened the bidding on the freshman first, and from there, the auction moved fast. The crowd got more and more frenzied as the more senior—and thus more well-known— players came under the hammer. Davis and Bant were auctioned off as part of the junior line-up, both of them going for more than a hundred dollars each.

“Van’s up next,” Imogen said, laughing when a freshman girl in the front row practically fainted when she called Van’s name and he winked at her.

“Okay ladies, get your wallets ready because we’re moving onto the big dogs!” the auctioneer called. “The killers on the court, the boys who can ball the best, the seniors!”

Screams echoed, Imogen, Monty, and I pulling faces at each other amongst the chaos.

“First up
